唐朝初建，为统一全国，简化军饷筹集步骤，故唐朝建国伊始仍然沿用五铢钱。在唐朝始铸开元通宝之前，始于汉代的五铢钱在全国已流通700余年之久。当唐朝局势稳定后，为适应其统治需要，于武德四年（公元621年）七月，颁诏废五铢钱，由唐高祖李渊亲自主导，给事中欧阳询监制，改铸统一的开元通宝。在开元通宝始铸之后，唐朝（公元618年—公元907年）于贞观二年（公元628年）灭掉盘踞朔方的梁师都，成为了一个统一的多民族国家。这时，封建地主经济与文化在全国范围内得到了较长时期的稳定发展，整个封建社会的经济与文化均呈现出繁荣景象。可见，开元通宝的铸行对历史的进程有着良好的推进作用。
