中国古代四大美女，即西施、王昭君、貂蝉、杨玉环 。四大美女享有“沉鱼落雁之容，闭月羞花之貌”的美誉。“沉鱼、落雁、闭月、羞花”是由精彩故事组成的历史典故。“沉鱼”，讲的是西施浣纱的故事。“落雁”，指的就是昭君出塞的故事，“闭月”，是述说貂蝉拜月的故事，“羞花”，谈的是杨玉环贵妃醉酒观花时的故事。

传说西施在古越国浦阳江边浣纱，水中的鱼儿看到她的容貌，都惊艳得沉入江底。“昭君出塞”时，王昭君行于大漠途中，悲怀于自身命运和远离家乡，因而在马上百无聊赖，弹《出塞曲》。而天边飞过的大雁，听到曲调的幽怨和感伤，肝肠寸断，纷纷的掉落在地。因而“沉鱼落雁”中的“落雁”由此得名。貂蝉在花园中拜月时，有云彩遮住月光，被王允看到。此后王允就对人说貂禅比月亮还漂亮，称为“闭月”。杨玉环在花园中赏花时悲叹自己的命运，用手抚花，也许是含羞草，也许是别的原因，花瓣收缩，花叶垂下。被宫女看见，就说杨贵妃与花儿比美，花儿都羞得低下了头。

The four most beautiful women in ancient China were xi shi, wang zhaojun, diao chan and Yang yuhuan. The four beauties enjoy the reputation of "the beauty of the moon". "Sinking fish, falling geese, closing the moon and blushing flowers" is a historical allusion composed of wonderful stories. "Shen yu" tells the story of xi shi huan sha.
