古代，冬天取暖，人们离不开暖炉。暖炉从唐朝始创以来，已有一千多年历史，大致可分为三个时期：唐、宋、元为早幼期；明清为鼎盛期；清末民国为衰落期。从传世的实物来看，基本都是明清及民国时期的各种暖炉，明代的暖炉比较厚重，没有花哨，主要的纹饰都在炉的盖子上。

到了明清鼎盛时期，暖炉工艺达到了炉火纯青的境界，制炉工艺人才辈出，各方高手特色显著。暖炉选材除水磨红铜、紫铜、银白铜、白铜、黄铜等，也出现了景泰蓝、漆、玉、铜镀等欣赏性暖炉。暖炉炉盖镂空的雕刻，各种图案，状态各异，精致生动。暖炉的炉身上也开始有了纹饰，有的还满身刻花，炉底及提柄处有作坊或人名款识。
