古代,冬天取暖,人们离不开暖炉。暖炉从唐朝始创以来,已有一千多年历史,大致可分为三个时期:唐、宋、元为早幼期;明清为鼎盛期;清末民国为衰落期。从传世的实物来看,基本都是明清及民国时期的各种暖炉,明代的暖炉比较厚重,没有花哨,主要的纹饰都在炉的盖子上。

到了明清鼎盛时期,暖炉工艺达到了炉火纯青的境界,制炉工艺人才辈出,各方高手特色显著。暖炉选材除水磨红铜、紫铜、银白铜、白铜、黄铜等,也出现了景泰蓝、漆、玉、铜镀等欣赏性暖炉。暖炉炉盖镂空的雕刻,各种图案,状态各异,精致生动。暖炉的炉身上也开始有了纹饰,有的还满身刻花,炉底及提柄处有作坊或人名款识。
