此件唐代贞观金碗，应该说是“唐鸳鸯莲瓣纹金碗”。金碗犹如盛开的花朵，大体取自莲花的造型，碗壁通体锤揲为莲瓣，然后用錾刻的手法在最显眼的每个莲瓣内都以一种动物作主题纹饰，有狐、兔、獐、鹿、鹦鹉、鸳鸯等，其周同则填以形态各异的花草。走兽或抬腿狂奔，或回头相顾；禽鸟或展翅飞翔，或站立栖息，不管是静态的还是动态的，个个栩栩如生，呼之欲出，富有强烈的韵律感，让人能感受到生命跃动的激情。下层莲瓣内则一律为相同的忍冬草，以相对的稳定，营造出平和、恬静的气氛，烘托上层动物的生机勃勃。所选择的动物题材，或者是人们打猎中常见的，或者是具有和谐美满、多子多福等吉祥寓意的。
