开元通宝”为唐代货币。钱币在唐代始有“通宝”。唐初沿用隋五铢，轻小淆杂。唐高祖武德四年(公元621年)，为整治混乱的币制，废隋钱，效仿西汉五铢的严格规范，开铸“开元通宝”，取代社会上遗存的五铢。最初的“开元通宝”由书法家欧阳询题写，面文“开元通宝”，形制仍沿用秦方孔圆钱，规定每十文重一两，每一文的重量称为一钱，而一千文则重六斤四两。

《 旧唐书·食货志上》记载:“武德四年七月，废五铢钱，行开元通宝钱。开元钱之文，为给事中 欧阳询制词及书，文字庄重、隽秀、挺拔，时称其工。其字在篆隶之间，其词先上后下，次右左读之(即直读，读作开元通宝)。自上及右回环读之(即旋读，读作开通元宝)，其义亦通，流俗谓之开通元宝钱。”从《旧唐书》的记载中看，规范读法是“开元通宝”。但也能从记载中了解到有些人将钱文读成“开通元宝”。从字面意义上讲，两种读法都有道理。但从文史依托上讲，“开元通宝”读法中的“开元”一词最迟在 东汉初年时就已经出现。“通宝”一词，则为欧阳询首创，意为流通中的宝物，故钱币在唐代始有“通宝”。“开通”一词在唐以前古籍中指打通，疏通，引荐之意。“元宝”一词在西晋 陈寿的《 三国志》中有记载，指不可多得的人才。但二者均与钱文含义根本搭不上边。故可见读成“开元通宝”有文史依托，显得自然。而读成“开通元宝”则缺乏文史依托，显得突兀。

开元通宝，在我国钱币史上具有划时代的地位。“开元”，意指开辟新纪元;“通宝”，意指通行宝货。开元钱的划时代地位表现在:唐代以前的钱币，多以形制或重量为名称，如刀币、五铢钱等，而自开元钱后，改称“宝”、“通宝”、“元宝”等。开元通宝是唐朝统治290年中的主要流通货币，而且影响了中国1000多年钱币的形制、钱文模式和十进位衡法。开元通宝的形制不但成了后世小平钱的基本铸式，还被沿袭了一千三百年之久，开元通宝控制下的通货状况良好，贞观年间斗米仅三五文，开元年间斗米仅十文。

Therefore, it can be seen that "kaiyuan tongbao" is based on literature and history, which seems natural. And read "open gold ingot" lack of literature and history rely on, appear abrupt.

Kaiyuan tongbao has an epoch-making position in the history of Chinese COINS. "New century" means opening up a new era; "Tongbao" refers to the passage of precious goods. The epochal status of new century qian is shown in the following aspects: COINS before the tang dynasty were mostly named by shape, system or weight, such as dao qian, five-baht qian, etc. After new century qian, they were renamed "bao", "tongbao" and "ingot". Kaiyuan tongbao was the main currency in circulation during the 290 years of the tang dynasty, and influenced the form, pattern and decimal scale of Chinese COINS for more than 1,000 years. The form and system of tongbao in kaiyuan not only became the basic form of xiaoping's money in later times, but also was followed for 1,300 years. The currency condition under the control of tongbao in kaiyuan was good. In zhenguan period, only 35 articles were used to measure rice, and in kaiyuan period, only 10 articles were used to measure rice.
