清朝灭亡之后，1912年4月袁世凯出任大总统。北洋政府鉴于当时铸币、纸币十分复杂，流通的中外货币在百种以上，规格不一，流通混乱，折算繁琐，民众积怨，同时也想借助货币改制以解决军费问题，便决定铸发国币。袁世凯为了提高自己的统治地位，把他的头像铸于币面，"袁大头"由此而来。
民国十年袁大头正面为袁世凯五分侧面像，上列“中华民国十年造”七字，“造”字的告字第四笔是微两撇，普通的是正常的一横，国字第二笔不带勾，肩章的框和杠是粗线条与其它年号的肩章明显不同。 钱币背面的图案则是一对称的弯曲麦芒，中间刻有“壹圆”两个字作为计量单位。嘉禾局部浅打，以右中部明显，一些禾粒若现若隐，使嘉禾显得稀松。其色泽光鲜自然，边缘线条粗细均匀，间距也疏密一致。发丝、胡须等细微之处清晰有度，生动自然。钱币整体设计和谐，图案精美，工艺技术特别精益求精，是具有很高收藏价值的精品银元，其未来升值无可限量。
