鸡血石同寿山石、田黄石并列，享有中国“四大古玩”的美称，鸡血石因鲜红色似鸡血的辰砂(朱砂)而得名，已有数千年文化，鸡血石美丽、晶莹、稀少，历来被誉为“石后”、“印石公主”、“章石皇后”，奈何如今鸡血石开发已到尾声，所以出产的鸡血石产量相当有限，成为世界上之物，极其稀少，价值难以言喻。鸡血石是辰砂条带的地开石，其颜色比朱砂还鲜红。因为它的颜色像鸡血一样鲜红，所以人们俗称鸡血石。我国早发现的鸡血石鸡血石由于产量相当有限，市场价格经久不衰。

鸡血石，因其石色如鸡血般鲜红而得名，是四大印章石之一，产于浙江昌化附近的深山和内蒙古赤峰巴林右旗，因此有昌化鸡血石和巴林鸡血石两种。
由于昌化鸡血石出产较早，宋代时即有开采，所以其价格比巴林鸡血石要高出一段。在特征方面，昌化鸡血石较纯粹，巴林鸡血石多花纹，所以有“南血北地”之称。“地”是鸡血石中的基质，成分以黏土矿物中的地开石或高岭石为主，颜色多为白、黄、灰等；而“血”则是指鸡血石中的不同色调，
虽说鸡血石是因石色如鸡血而得名，但在传说中，那可是凤凰的血。相传，古代有一种叫“鸟狮”的鸟，生性好斗。一天，觅食飞过玉岩山，见一凰正在孵蛋，顿生恶念，向其发起攻击。毫无准备的凰被咬断了腿。凤闻讯赶到，同仇敌忾，战胜了“鸟狮”。凤凰虽然胜利了，但凰鲜血直流，染红了整个玉岩山，遂成了光泽莹透如美玉的鸡血石。
