1912年4月袁世凯出任。北洋鉴于当时铸币、纸币十分复杂，流通的中外货币在百种以上，规格不一，流通混乱，折算繁琐，民众积怨，同时也想借助货币改制以解决军费问题，便决定铸发国币。袁世凯为了提高自己的统治地位，趁机把他的头像铸于币面，“袁大头”由此而来。

　　“袁大头”在货币收藏界被称为银元之宝，它是中国近千种近代银币中流传*广、影响的银元品种，也是近代中国币制变革中的一个重要角色。由于它是实物货币，介于人们对贵金属的认可，以及对历史文化强烈的认同感，因此收藏的人不在少数。

。钱币正面铸刻袁世凯侧面戎装像；钱币背面上环“中华民国八年造”七字；正中竖写币值“壹圓”两字，左右两侧为稻穗组成的嘉禾纹。嘉就是丰硕、美好、祥瑞的意思。禾就是禾苗。“嘉禾”就是美禾，茁壮之禾，硕大之禾，祥瑞之禾。九穗之禾，象征丰收，繁荣。此枚民国八年造袁大头钱纹清晰，铸工精湛，品相优良，包浆自然，具有较高的历史文化价值。
