第三套人民币是中国人民银行于1962年4月20日开始发行的，第三套人民币自1962年正式发行至2000年退出流通领域。该套纸币历时50年来，市场沉淀充分，深受广大收藏爱好者热捧。大全套完整样票已经被收录到国 家钱币博物馆，是重要文物。与第二套人民币比价相等，并在市场上与之混合流通。这套人民币与第二套人民币相比，取消了3元纸币，保留了1分、2分、5分纸币。第三套人民币共有1角、2角、5角、1元、2元、5元、10元7种面额、9种版别，其中1角券别有3种、2角、5角、1元、2元、5元、10元有1种。1966年和1967年，又先后两次对1角纸币进行改版，主要是增加满版水印，调整背面颜色。总的可细分为30余种。其中五元炼钢工人曾获得国际钱币设计奖，二元车工和一元手扶拖拉机手都是很珍贵的，反应了当时国家进行工业化进程决心。
第三套人民币较第二套人民币又有新的特点： 一是主题思想鲜明。内容相互呼应，极富民族特色，象征文化教育新改革。1元券正面为女拖拉机手图，象征农业为基础，背面的羊群象征发展畜牧业；2元券正面为车床工人图，象征工业为主导5元券正面为炼钢工人图，象征工业以钢为纲；2、5元券背面的石油矿井和露天煤矿象征发展能源工业；10元券正面为“人民代表步出大会堂”图，象征人民参政议政，当家做主人，背面以红色牡丹花和彩带衬托天安门，象征伟大祖国的富强和团结。
二是进一步打破了边框式设计思想。辅币除最初设计的枣红色1角券仍保留了变形的底边框外，全部取消了边框，成为开放式构图。这样，在较小的票面上显得画面开阔、深远。 
三是色彩丰富。第二套人民币由于印刷技术所限，基本上是单色的，这样的票面既不够美观，也不利于防伪。第三套人民币的票面除了有一个基本色调外，还采用了多色印刷技术，这就使得画面色调活泼、丰富，又提高了防伪性能。 
四是增设了壮文，调整了四种少数民族文字的排序和印制位置。四种少数民族文字印制位置也根据票面图案布局进行了重新调整。 五是缩小了票幅。 六是画面设计和先进技术相结合。
