中外通宝发行时间非常早，发行时间跨度又极为短暂。中外通宝发行于咸丰年间，委托英国政府在香港铸造，是当时上海开阜通商是发行用对外的贸易银币，方便对内外征收关税，采用海关计量单位发行，后因二次鸦片战争和义和团运动导致停铸。
 

有关中外通宝银币的铸造情况，钱币学界目前存在着三种说法：一种说法认为，中外通宝银币系咸丰四年(1854)上海江海关成立，当局委托外国先进造币厂铸造；另一种说法认为，中外通宝银币是英国造币厂代上海所铸之专作纳税用之银元，咸丰八年(1858)就有发现；还有一种说法则认为，中外通宝银币是朝鲜高丽高宗21年(1884)典圆局所铸，但不知所据。
 

此枚中外通宝关平壹两银币，正面内圈横书右左读“关平”，直书“银壹两”，外圈有直读“中外通宝”四字；背面内圈为太极八卦阴阳图，图中有一边是凸起网状纹，且纹路清晰，如刀刻所成，铸造工艺神乎其技，外圈双龙，首尾相连，且龙身纹路精美，看上去仿佛是一幅画，极其瑰丽，美得动人心魄！
