纵观康熙一朝，在全国共开设铸钱局二十四处。由于受当时冶铸工本和钱币私铸等问题的影响，每一文康熙钱曾分别重一钱四分、一钱、七分，这样一来便产生了我们今天见到的大、中、小三种不同重量的“康熙通宝”钱。康熙钱的背文除工部、户部所设的宝泉、宝源两局所铸均为满文外，其它外地各钱局鼓铸的通宝钱，其背文左为满文纪地，右为相应的汉字纪地。
