四神兽起初称为“四象”。“四象”是指水、火、土、金分布四方之象。《易·系辞上》说：“两仪主四象。”两仪即阴阳或天地。在上古，表示天空东南西北四大区星象是用东苍龙、西白虎、南朱雀、北玄武。南春秋战国时期，由于五行学说盛行，根据《黄帝内经》五行与五色的搭配关系，木为青色，为木叶萌芽之色；火为赤色，为篝火燃烧之色；土为黄色，为地气勃发之色；金为白色，为金属光泽之色；水为黑色，为深渊无垠之色，所以“四象”也被配色成为青龙、白虎、朱雀、玄武。两汉时期，四象演化成为道教所信奉的神灵，故而四圣兽也被称为四灵兽。东方青龙五行属木色青、南方朱雀五行属火色红、西方白虎五行属金色白、北方玄武五行属水色黑、中央无极属土色黄。鸟、西虎、北龟蛇（武）四组动物；这四组动物，同时也是中国古代神话中的四方之神灵。
