烛台作为照明用具，其历史十分悠久，还用于供奉或礼佛。战国时已有各式精美的铜烛台，三国两晋时期制瓷工艺发展，青瓷烛台出现。
 

此龙纹莲坐鎏金烛台上部为插筒，作莲花托。其下承接盘龙纹样，圆雕祥龙盘绕于烛台柄部，立体感极强，祥龙双目圆睁，口部张开，头部上扬，身躯蜿蜒，腿部有力，须髯随身姿走势飘扬开去，动态十足。最下部底座外壁雕琢莲花纹样，创意别致，足见工匠之心思。整器造型优美，做工精致，彰显雍容华贵之气。保存完好，更为难得。

该烛台采用鎏金工艺，作为古代金属工艺装饰技法之一。鎏金近代称“火镀金”，汉代称“金涂”或“黄涂”。黄金具有华丽的色泽，稳定的化学性质，良好的延展性和耐腐蚀性，很早即被人类发现和利用。从目前发掘的实物看，早在春秋末期已有鎏金器物，1975年云南省楚雄县万家坝第21号墓出土镀金铜片三件，第35号墓出土镀金铜管38件，经测试这些铜金构件相当于春秋末期。山东曲阜出土了春秋末战国初的鎏金长臂猿。我国早先秦时期已经盛行在建筑物上装饰金玉珠翠，到汉代更以装饰珍贵材料来显示建筑物的高贵。在《汉书·赵飞燕传》中，记载了昭阳宫“砌皆铜沓黄金涂，白玉阶”，在洁白的白玉石台阶上铺就金黄的鎏金铜沓。至明清两代，寺庙、宫殿装饰鎏金构件更是彼彼皆是，不胜枚举。鎏金是将金和水银合成金汞剂，涂在铜器表面，然后加热使水银蒸发，而金则附着于器面不脱落。
