晚清光绪十三年(公元1887年)，两广总督张之洞，为维护清政府的统治，根据清政府的财政情况及对外贸易的需要，奏请清政府，主张自行铸制银元“龙洋”。获准后，于光绪十五年(公元1889年)，在广东设厂开始制造广东省光绪元宝，到光绪十六年(公元1890年)，广东省光绪元宝进入市面开始流通。随后，张之洞调任湖广总督，紧接着湖北省立马步广东省之后尘，于光绪二十一年(公元1895年)，开设造币厂制造湖北省光绪元宝。与此同时，天津的北洋机器局也开始制造银元。见此情况，清政府的一些御史官员先后奏请清政府准许各省仿效广东、湖北两省。在清政府“各省一律鼓铸”的圣旨下后，各省闻风而动，仿效广东、湖北两省，争先恐后的竞相设厂制造本省的光绪元宝。

After being approved, Guangxu Yuanbao of Guangdong Province was manufactured in Guangxu 15th year (1889 A.D.). By Guangxu 16th year (1890 A.D.), Guangxu Yuanbao of Guangdong Province entered the market and began to circulate. Later, Zhang Zhidong was appointed Governor of Huguang, followed by Hubei Province, which immediately followed Guangdong Province. In the 21st year of Guangxu (AD 1895), he opened a mint to manufacture Guangxu Yuanbao in Hubei Province. At the same time, Tianjin's Beiyang Machinery Bureau began to produce silver dollars. In view of this situation, some imperial officials of the Qing government successively asked the Qing government to allow provinces to follow the example of Guangdong and Hubei provinces. Under the Qing government's decree of "all provinces are cast by drums", all provinces followed the example of Guangdong and Hubei provinces, competing to set up factories to manufacture Guangxu Yuanbao.

 江南省造光绪元宝系指清代光绪二十三年到三十一年（1897-1905年）由南京造币厂铸造的机制“光绪元宝”系列钱币，系清代正式铸行的法定流通货币。但铸造江南省造钱币的清末，已无江南省建制。江南省设于清朝顺治二年（1645年），省府位于江宁（今南京）。清代的江南省前身是明朝的南直隶江南省，范围大致相当于今天的江苏省、上海市和安徽省。康熙六年（1667年）清廷撤江南省，分设江苏和安徽两个省。南京造币厂将其铸造的货币标明“江南省造”，是因为当时苏州已经有一个专铸机制铜元的造币厂，并且其铸造的铜元均标明“江苏省造”。为避免混淆，南京造币厂将其铸造的银币标明为“江南省造”。江南省造货币系我国货币史上唯一有名无实的省份货币。

The Guangxu Yuanbao of Jiangnan Province refers to the “Guangxu Yuanbao” series of coins, which was cast by the Nanjing Mint in the Qing Dynasty from the 23rd to the 31st of the Qing Dynasty (1897-1905). It is the legal currency that was officially cast in the Qing Dynasty. . However, in the late Qing Dynasty, the founding of Jiangnan Province's coin-making currency was no longer established in Jiangnan Province. Jiangnan Province was established in the second year of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty (1645), and the provincial capital is located in Jiangning (now Nanjing). The predecessor of Jiangnan Province in the Qing Dynasty was Nanzhili Jiangnan Province of the Ming Dynasty, which is roughly equivalent to today's Jiangsu Province, Shanghai City and Anhui Province. In the sixth year of Kangxi (1667), the Qing court was removed from Jiangnan Province and divided into two provinces, Jiangsu and Anhui. The Nanjing Mint marked the currency of its founding in “Jiangnan Province” because at that time, Suzhou had a mint plant with a special casting mechanism, and the copper coins it cast were marked “Jiangsu Province”. In order to avoid confusion, the Nanjing Mint marked its minted silver coins as “made by Jiangnan Province”. The Jiangnan Provincial Currency is the only provincial currency in the history of China's currency.

In the front circle of the coins, "Guangxu Yuanbao" is engraved, with "Jiangnan Yuanbao" and "Anhui Yuanbao" engraved on the top, with "Jiachen" engraved on the left and right sides of Jiangnan Province, and "every yuan should be used to make ten pieces of money" engraved on the bottom. On the back is a flying dragon with two dragon heads, with drooping dragon whiskers and protruding nose beams With bright eyes, fine dragon patterns and English seals, Guangxu Yuanbao bears the social background and cultural characteristics of an era and is deeply influenced by history.

古钱币极具观赏性与历史价值，因此古钱币如同其他古玩一样被藏家们所青睐。中国最早的机制洋式银元为光绪年间的“光绪元宝”，俗称“龙洋”，因银元背面 一般铸有龙纹而得名。珍稀古钱币是货币历史的实物，由于早已不在流通领域，留存下来的亦少之极少，更是历史的见证。
