清咸丰年间(1851-1861年)，太平天国农民起义开展迅猛，并在江苏南京建都，此刻清政府赖以铸钱之用的滇铜，因路途阻断而无法运进北京。一方面是打压起义急需许多的军饷开支，一方面是铸钱的原材料告缺，给清政府造成了严峻的财务困难，最终迫使清政府自咸丰三年开端发行纸币和改铸大钱来补偿财务亏空。咸丰朝宝泉局所铸钱有“当百”、“当二百”、“当三百”、“当五百”、“当千”等五种面值。

咸丰大钱就是在这样的大背景下产生的。咸丰元宝当千钱币是这些重铸的大钱里面面值最高的品种，但是如今的存世的量十分稀少。该枚咸丰元宝当千，直径：直径58.2㎜，方孔直径8.8㎜，厚度4㎜。铭文字体雕刻得精致而又清晰，钱币表面则清秀俊朗，刻着“咸丰元宝”四个字，背穿上下“当千”，左右满文雕刻宝局名，“宝源”两字横排。再读钱文，可见无论面文还是背文，其楷书书意皆为端庄正点，笔划有力，笔锋鲜明，布局协调规范，宝源局铸品之书意神韵昭然，历史过渡性自然，为钱币珍品。形制规整，大小合适，包浆老道，锈色自然，岁月流痕鲜明，流通使用痕迹明显，铜质精巧。其传世品质色品貌一目了然矣。由于咸丰元宝当前钱币流传下来的不多，存世的十分稀少，所以该钱币是十分珍贵的，很值得收藏。
