At that time, due to the needs of the environment and background, most of them wrote about the Qianlong and Yongzheng of the Qing Dynasty. 王步晚年十分讲究青料与瓷釉的色泽，他所使用的青料多由自己配制，一般来说，青中微带蓝黑，给人以庄重、浑厚、宁静之感。他的青花瓷忌用纯白釉，而常用一种白里泛青光亮度较弱的釉子，他认为这种釉比纯白釉和古代的重石灰釉含蓄，与青花结合有温厚的效果而无浮滑之感。除此之外，他选用与青花相斗的釉下彩料时，也不用铬绿、锰红，而喜欢选用釉里红与龙泉青釉及淡紫金釉。由于使用这些材料绘制，他的作品常常获得浑厚的艺术效果。

王的青花极为注重装饰与器型的统一关系，如一九六五年赴日展青花釉红扁方瓶，以牵牛花为装饰题材，纹饰随器型旋转而变化。所画鲇鱼、双鸭大盘，均随器型用半刀泥刻成水波纹，即使青花形象突出又与微微下凹的盘面极为一致，独具匠心。

国画上的渲染在青花上叫作“分水”，用青料在泥坯上分水与宣纸上泼墨作画不同，纸上作画当即可见效果，而青花“分水”当时只是黑压压的一片，只有在烧成之后才能见到效果。王步的大片分水(面积大的一尺余)，从浓到淡一气呵成，料分五色，浑然一体，除“分水”之外，以线为骨，生平好用铁线描与折芦描，用笔圆润苍劲，其线条有如惊蛇走龙，疾驰于淋漓苍润的云水之中(分水)。王步除辛勤劳动一生留下了丰富的陶瓷遗产之外，其正直、朴素、不依附权贵的品格也为人景仰。他在旧社会曾拒绝给封建官僚画题材庸俗的作品，甘心贫穷失业。解放后辛勤劳动，为党为人民创作过无数的优秀作品，尤其是在去世前几年，在探求艺术瓷创新的同时，还希望普通的劳动人民也能使用他的青花，还画了许多民间用瓷的渣胎碗装饰纹样。足见他的艺术和劳动人民息息相关。

2018年06月15日下午，北京匡时2018年春拍“瓷苑撷英——近当代陶瓷专场”在北京嘉里大酒店举槌，其中，民国“青花大王”王步《青花人物故事瓷板》以880万元起拍，经过近5分钟竞争，2550万元落槌，加佣金最终以2932.5万元成交，刷新其作品拍卖纪录。
