天珠一词源自20世纪80年代中国改革开放以后，台湾商人将西藏地区广为流传有着悠久历史文化藏民称为“瑟”的宝石饰品推广到世界各地以及中国大陆地区，为了便于不同文化领域的人民理解西藏地区这一古老的宝石，根据在藏区人们将“瑟”珠又称为“天降石”的习俗，便将这种西藏地区独有的宝石“瑟”（ZI）译为“天珠”，并根据藏区各种关于“瑟”珠的传说赋予“天珠”各种吉祥的名称与寓意，“天珠”一词由此开始广泛流传至今。天珠又分天然天珠与人造天珠两类，在藏区流传的关于天珠的各种神奇传说的天珠为天然天珠。
