金银质地的钱币几乎贯穿了中国钱币历史的始终。如楚金版即古所谓“印子金”历来的发现和记录甚多，可知先秦时期黄金作为货币在楚国的使用是广泛而发达的。稍后的实物有金银五铢、货泉，均极精美，展现了两汉铸钱工艺的高超和成熟。三国两晋南北朝至隋，虽未见实物，但金银钱的使用不乏记载，而且南北朝时经丝绸之路罗马、拜占庭、萨珊王朝的金银钱开始流入中国，前辈学者推测五铢货泉等金银钱是受其影响的产物也不无可能。唐时宫廷常以金银钱作赏赐、撒帐、洗儿等用，且唐律不禁民间铸金银钱，故流用颇广，记载亦多，然存世者以往唯见开元通宝金银钱，近年四川出有乾元重宝银质小平，存世之金银钱中是否另有唐铸者尚待研究。五代十国时期不长，存世有大唐通宝、唐国通宝银钱。

两宋金银钱的铸造堪称高峰,北宋几乎各年号钱各形制各钱文均有金银钱，早期的品种并不多，北宋初年宋元、太平皆有与铜钱同版之银钱，淳化元宝金钱面版亦与铜钱无异。至徽宗朝则空前丰富，金银钱品种尤多，圣宋、崇宁、大观、政和、宣和皆见有小平银钱，版式繁多，精粗不一，政和、宣和且有小金钱极精。靖康通宝银钱是北宋最后一种银钱，存世实物制作并不考究。

此枚“绍定万岁”银钱此钱光背无文,钱文楷书, 字口深峻有如刀削,书法遒劲,特殊之处是“定”字写法,末笔一捺与撇笔交叉,或许有某种寓意.该钱形制规整,工艺精美,包浆黝黑,坚硬老到,熟美圆润，由于年代久远，银质有些腐蚀剥落，乃北方干坑美品。与上海博物馆藏品“绍定万岁”钱（南方生坑）对比, 可见是一枚珍罕银质真钱无疑。
