淳化元宝于北宋太宗淳化元年（公元990年）开始铸造，相传钱文为宋太宗赵光义手书，即所谓的“御书体”。钱面顺时针旋读，钱背一般为光背，但在1988年村，我国发现了钱背为佛像的特殊“淳化元宝”。淳化元宝发行的时候，正值北宋逐步稳定，国力走强之时，淳化元宝因此比较稀少，宋太宗淳化初年，太宗深感江山不稳，尤其当时宋与辽金沙滩大败。他亲自督工铸造该钱币并送至五台山窖藏，希望保佑大宋国泰民安，帝业万代不断。

  此枚钱币直径：2.4cm。钱币外圆内方，左右各铸有佛像。钱币正面刻书“淳化元宝”四字，笔法隽永流连，十分洒脱。钱背造像的解说向来多有纷纭，坐像多认系观音，立像则有善财童子及韦驮等说。钱币背面佛像神态逼真，栩栩如生。右边为手持莲花，坐于莲花宝座之上的观音菩萨，宝座底下祥云缠绕。左边为头上结发，双手合十，身体微向右侧站立，在莲花瓣座上的善财童子，当为一幅童子拜观童的画面。淳化元宝背面所铸的两尊佛像，均有莲花宝座和祥云依托，充分突显出宋朝对佛教的重视，对佛教的信奉自古至今都存在，敬仰佛祖，教人慈爱善良，这是值得收藏的原因之一。另外，铜钱上的图案，不仅是“淳化元宝”四个字，更是钱币背面的佛像都雕刻的神态自如、线条流畅自然、清晰庄严，栩栩如生，可以看出当时年代的金属雕刻工艺水平.
