五路财神共有两种说法，其一是指的赵公明及其手下的四位部将。东路财神除了中路为武财神赵公明外，其余四路为东路财神招宝天尊萧升、西路财神纳珍天尊曹宝、南路财神招财使者陈九公、北路财神利市仙官姚少司 。这五路财神的故事可从一部中国的古典名著《封神演绎》中探得其来历：赵公明是在开天辟地时修成大道，法力通玄，本来在三山五岳任其逍遥，奈何烽烟四起，神仙也不能置之度外 。在商朝太师闻仲的邀请下，赵公明伙同其他几个截教的神仙萧升、曹宝、陈九公、姚少司等与西岐军队大战并屡败对方，一时声威大振，奈何截教违反天规，最终被辅佐西岐的正道阐教神仙所杀，魂归封神榜 。待战争结束后，姜子牙封神时，感其忠勇，赵公明被封为金龙如意正乙龙虎玄坛真君之神，率领四部正神招宝天尊萧升、纳珍天尊曹宝、招财使者陈九公、利市仙官姚少司，主迎祥纳福，管天下财运，故俗称财神 。
