辛亥革命以后，袁世凯就任"临时大总统"之职，后又成为正式大总统。当时，为了巩固国内政局稳定，发展民族经济，也为"制宪"和"称帝"作准备，于是毅然决定在全国"统一币制"。1912年4月袁世凯出任大总统。北洋政府鉴于当时铸币、纸币十分复杂，流通的中外货币在百种以上，规格不一，流通混乱，折算繁琐，民众积怨，同时也想借助货币改制以解决军费问题，便决定铸发国币；

 

 北洋军阀政府正式铸造袁世凯头像银币，因币上铸有袁世凯侧身头像，故民间俗称'袁大头’。所以俗称的'袁大头’主要指壹圆袁世凯头像银币。民国八年（1919年）国内货币膨胀，为平衡国际货币汇率，政府下令铸造五元面值银币。北京政府宣告：对德断绝外交关系，收回天津、汉口德租界，停付赔款与欠款。袁大头八年伍元面值就搁置没有流通，试铸的一批政府当军饷发放各军高级将领。然后流落民间。

 

正面为袁世凯五分侧面像，上列“中华民国八年”六字；背面两条嘉禾，左右交互，下系结带，中铸“壹圆”二字。钱币上文字、图案、花纹的色泽光鲜自然，纹饰深浅适度，边缘线条粗细均匀，间距也疏密一致。人像、发丝、胡须、穗芒等细微之处清晰有度，很生动，即使是“百年高龄”，但是仍然保存完整，品相较好。

In order to balance the international currency exchange rate, the government ordered the casting of five-dollar denominated silver coins.The Beijing government declared that it would sever diplomatic relations with Germany, withdraw concessions in Tianjin and Hankou, and suspend payment of reparations and arrears.In the first eight years of Yuan's reimbursement, the denomination of Wu Yuan was put on hold without circulation, and a group of government trial-casts were paid to senior military generals.Then they fled to the people.
