《芥子园画谱》介绍了中国画的芥子园画谱的技法。《芥子园画谱》自300多年前出版以来，不断拓展出新，康熙年间的"王概本"、光绪年间的"巢勋本"为世人学画必修之书。全书通过国画艺术家们多年作画、教学与出版的经验，同时结合中老年初学者的学习特点进行编辑出版。

 《画传》出世，备受时人赞赏。光绪十三年，何镛在所作后序中写道:"一病经年，面对此谱，颇得卧游之乐。"并题联云:"尽收城郭归檐下，全贮湖山在目中。"

画谱系统地介绍了中国画的基本技法，浅显明了，宜于初学者习用，故问世300余年来，风行于画坛，至今不衰。许多成名的艺术家，当初入门，皆得惠于此。称其为启蒙之良师，是一点不过分的。

画坛巨匠齐白石，幼年家贫好学，初以雕花匠为生。20岁那年，随师外出做活，见到一主顾家有部乾隆年间翻刻的《芥子园画谱》五彩精致版 ，仔细翻阅之后，发现自己能画，多不合章法，故如获至宝，遂借来用勾影雷公像的方法，画了半年之久，勾影了16本之多。从此，他以所画为据来做雕花木活，既能花样出新，画法又合规则，为其后来绘画打下良好基础。据说真到晚年，白石老人还念念不忘此事。他因而40岁后画画出名，跨越了1个世纪，终年95周岁。

著名国画家潘天寿，14岁到县城读书时，从文具店买到一部《芥子园画谱》，成了他学画的第一位老师。在无人指导下，他照谱学画，如醉如痴，终成一代大师。

山水画名家陆俨少，从小喜画，苦于无师。12岁到南翔公学读书时，得到一本石印的《芥子园画谱》，像得到心爱的宝物一样，如饥似渴地临摹，从此迈出了画家生涯的第一步。

郭沫若先生是众所周知的文学家、历史学家和诗人，然其能画，则鲜为人知。他尤喜画兰花，曾画兰赠友人范令棣先生。他之所以能画，是因在家塾"绥山馆"里，常描摹《芥子园画谱》。郭沫若先生曾为其弟郭开运画的《葵菊图》题诗道:"不因能傲霜，秋葵亦可仰。我非陶渊明，安能作欣赏。幼时亦能画，至今手犹庠。愿得芥子园，恢复吾伎俩。"郭老如能学画不辍，早当成名画坛了。

《芥子园画谱》施惠画坛300余年，育出代代名家，可谓功德无限。何镛所言，此书"足以名世，足以寿世"，然也。
