1916年护国战争结束后，云南都督唐继尧野心膨胀，利用护国战争树立起来的威望向外扩张，与川、黔军阀连年混战，在滇军内部为争权夺地互相混战，致使军费开支庞大，单靠沿袭旧制征收的田赋、盐税、厘金等税，已不能满足军阀战争的需要，于是唐继尧采取各种手段进行搜刮，以充军饷，铸造镍币便是其中之一。

唐继尧不愿铸壹角银币，认为太费工时影响造币余利的提高，但却热衷于铸造壹角镍币，因为铸镍币成本低，利益更大。在1924——1935年间，从日本进口原料，鼓铸为辅币，分壹毫、半毫两种。

1919年后，云南的白银来源减少，外流增加，云南造币厂缺乏铸料。富滇银行纸币随着发行增加，已出现贬值、贴水。从1922年百元纸币兑换银元98元，至1923-1926年仅兑银元40元。1923年，经云南省公署批准，云南造币分厂从日本定制钢模，购入镍币原料，于1924年起开铸壹毫镍币的初铸版。约在8月，市面出现伪制镍币。滇省公署令造币厂改铸镍币式样，减轻币重，周围加银花边。省公署布告自9月1日起实行铸用新币。原拟铸镍币50万元，后因需要既多，省库亦可获铸币余利，遂逐年加铸。1924年1月22日，富滇银行总办马为麟、会办张鸿翼和张之霖呈请省政府规定镍币价格每1枚换当十铜币10枚或纸币1.4角；镍币2.4元当银元1元。2月2日，省政府布告批准富滇银行呈请的镍币价格，通令行使。1935年11月，南京国民政府宣布法币政策，云南停铸镍币，1937年9月，中央政府与云南省政府达成协定，以新滇币作为法币的辅币，镍币一律照旧流通，换算率为镍币5角兑法币1角，镍币在云南的重点流通地区为昭通等地,，价格极不一致，也流入四川宜宾等地区。20世40年代前期，金沙江上游地区甚至主要流通镍币，政府一再重申法币1元换镍币20枚，而实际上仅能兑4角镍币。1948年8月，南京国民政府公布《金圆券发行办法》，10月26日财政部函复云南财政厅，滇铸壹毫镍币可照面值与金圆辅币同样行使。1950年3月，镍币停止流通。
