公元990年，宋太宗赵光义改太平兴国年号为淳化，意思是纯正平和，大概还是纠结于得位问题吧，强调他来位的正确性。今陕西省咸阳市下辖淳化县，便是当时的淳化四年，云阳县以天子年号改名的。淳化年号一共用了五年，即从公元990年到994年，这时候发行的铜钱就是淳化元宝。

 

淳化元宝发行的时候，正值北宋逐步稳定，国力走强之时，淳化元宝因此发行不算少，但由于年号时间使用不长，数量也不算最多，排不进北宋铜钱各品种中的前八名。但是版本并不少，而且还有大名誉品和国宝级的品种。另外淳化元宝有一种国宝级钱币，那就是淳化元宝供养版。宋太宗淳化初年，太宗深感江山不稳，尤其当时宋与辽金沙滩大败。他亲自督工铸造该钱币并送至五台山窖藏，希望保佑大宋国泰民安，帝业万代不断。正面淳化元宝隽永洒脱，清丽不凡，为宋太宗御书，背面为“童子拜观音”像，栩栩如生，该钱为铜质，华光普定为一级品。
