清咸丰年间（1851-1861年），太平天国农民起义发展迅猛，并在江苏南京建都，此时清政府赖以铸钱之用的滇铜（云南省出产的铜料），因道路阻断而无法运进北京。一方面是镇压起义急需大量的军饷开销，一方面是铸钱的原材料告缺，给清政府造成了严重的财政困难，最终迫使清政府自咸丰三年开始发行纸币和改铸大钱来弥补财政亏空。

此枚咸丰通宝重2.62g，直径2.01cm。正面铸有楷书“咸丰通宝”从上而下而右而左直读；钱币背面左右用满文写有钱局的名称。此枚咸丰通宝版本比较高档，字迹清晰深俊，铜质精良，铸工精细，包浆浑厚温润，字体清晰端庄，笔画圆润工整，中间穿正方形孔，在日光的照射下更散发出熠熠光辉。整币纹脉清晰，网格完整，表面有铁锈，制作精良，穿口打磨干净，轮廓、背郭整齐，字口、地章干净平整无留铜，并无明显的磕损，是难得一见的品相。
